Voilà Provides Phones to Haitian Branch of Boy Scouts – Teams Work Together to Distribute Donated Tents

In the wake of the earthquake, the Haiti branch of the Boy Scouts were ready to spring into action. Mr. Adrien Belaston, a man involved with the Scouts for 40 years, visited each of the only three functioning radio stations in Port-au-Prince with a solemn call to action. He called on all Scouts to present themselves for duty. He told them not to be afraid and to promote calm and to inform the population to, “Stay away from tilting walls!”

Once reunited with his  Scouts, Petitfa Jean Denis took on his responsibility as the second in command in the Western Department putting the “routiers”, Scouts ages 18-23, to work. These young men and women located in the Port-au-Prince have not stopped working since.

In collaboration with their diverse partner base, the Scouts of Haiti have participated in food distributions with the World Food Program and MINUSTAH, organizing the transfer of food, water and clothing to the population. Where tents are donated, they have taken on the task of installing them in open spaces. Where panic prevails they inform the public on the proper course of action, allaying fears with facts on the recurring tremors.

To Help the network of 44,000 Haitian Scouts communicate better to pool their resources, Voilà’s donated 150 phones with 32 hours of talk time on each.  Ernsto a scout whose family perished in their home is thankful for the phones saying that they will “permit teams that are spread out across the city to communicate with each other. And in the event that his team needs more help, he’ll be able to call for it and get everything they need sooner than later”.

These pictures show Voilà teams working with the Scouts to set up tents donated by Voilà.
